It turns out that even the two Bear Bozos don’t really care about Max the Manatee!

RRRRRRIIPPPPP! That’s the sound of me tearing what’s left of my hair off of my head. Has Rivera lost the point of this simple storyline? Let me help you out, Jules. Here is a recap:

So, what’s this revelation (panel 2) from NutJob #1 all about? Why would anybody kidnap someone because of a disagreement over their online posts? Clearly, Rita is not the only person posting scientific climate change information. Does Cricket Bro intend to kidnap everyone who disagrees with him? Sure, Cricket Bro is a duplicitous, self-serving conman, but there’s nothing in his character we have seen to suggest he would engage in felonious kidnapping. But I live to learn.

  1. This is sad. Seems to me, the cartoonist is suffering from a severe case of Dontgiveacrapitius. Several recent comments are right. The present strip is an insult to the legacy of the strip. The Comics Kingdom needs to intervene. Is there a petition to remove Jules Rivera I can sign?

Mark Trail is a long-running, if not historical, comic strip. I’m sure there’s an up-and-coming artist out there who’d love to list Mark Trail on their CV.

    R.I.P. Max

    • Right. Well, things can get better, if our assessment has any validity. Frankly, in spite of this dramatic pivot (who said there was no drama in Mark Trail, anway? Oh, me!), this story still has time to resolve existing issues as it spins off into a brand new direction.

I’m sure there are ways to contact CK. They probably have accounts on Instagram, maybe even Facebook. Bluesky? I have have not looked.

  2. I just watched an NBC national story on rescuing and re-introducing manatees back to the wild. Ten people carried a 500lb manatee on a very large tarp with handles. Jules needs to improve her accuracy.

    • And I bet it was a blue tarp, right? They always seem to be blue in the vids I’ve seen. Is that NBC story the one that talks about manatees starving from lack of sea grass? Tragic story, and I wonder if Florida is largely indifferent.

So that could have been the focus of this particular story, where Mark could have worked to help save the manatees by hunting down the water polluters, the same way Cherry looked for the kudzu polluter, the way Mark hunted the zebra mussel polluters, and the same way that the old Mark Trail hunted poachers.

Rivera still could have gotten Cricket Bro involved in that activity as one of the polluters. Certainly would have made a better environmental story than fake kidnappers in bear costumes!
