Can Cliff help Mark salvage the program?

I’ve noticed that Viewership and Visitor stats are down for the site. While there are no reasons provided for the reductions, it could be any of several things: a) the posts are too boring; b) they are too long; c) people gave up on the comic strip; or d) all of the above. In addition, I’ve been told that I write too much. I reckon yesterday was one of those days. But I don’t want this to simply be another Mark Trail “snark site” posting one or two biting remarks a day. So, I’ll start by trying to tighten up the prose. I can see that I’m already headed for trouble.

Rivera thankfully spared us from viewing the graphic depiction of tangled fishing line being removed from Connor’s hands. Cliff showed up in time with coffee so Mark can ponder why things are going wrong. He apparently doesn’t understand grammar very well, as he uses “they” and “these guys” when it was only Connor giving him grief. I think Cliff sees through Mark’s lament and suggests the hike to give Mark time to get himself sorted out. Panel 4 suggests he hasn’t figure that out yet. Thoughts?

  1. Sorry to hear your Viewership and Visitor stats are down.

I don’t think your blogs are too long or too boring. They only take a few minutes to read. Your blogs are fair to Jules Rivera. You criticize Jules’s work but mention ways she could do better, and you give compliments when she does something well. This blog is not just targeted abuse like the snarky blogs.

Another WordPress blog I read can take 15-20 minutes to read. Sometimes, the better part of an half hour to read all the comments.

I have chosen option c), which states that people gave up on the comic strip. I have been reading ‘The Daily Trail’ for over a year and a half, and I have noticed that the ‘Mark Trail’ comic strip has become campier and, for the most part, incoherent. If the purpose of the current story arc is for Mark to teach survival skills, then why start with fishing? Are the students supposed to eat the fish raw? Would it not be more practical to teach them essential survival skills such as fire-building and shelter-making?

I recently started reading ‘Mark Trail Vintage’ for comparison purposes. The stories sometimes drag, but there’s always something compelling about them. In the current story arc, I assume Rufus the Bear will be fine, but I’m curious about the plot’s direction. With the contemporary ‘Mark Trail,’ Jules swaps the story arcs unexpectedly and can return to them when we’ve mostly forgotten about them.

I should mention some issues I’ve encountered with the website. A few times my comment didn’t post and my upvotes don’t work. That may be turning off some of the visitors. Did WordPress make some changes?

  2. I should mention, I’m a subscriber to ‘The Daily Trail.’ Some days I read your blog in my email client and never visit the website.

    • Thanks for the comments; they are very helpful. I was not aware that “likes” or Comments were getting lost or not recorded. Sometimes the site flags Comments that I have go to approve in order to show up. I’ll check. I’m not aware of any changes in WordPress that would cause it.

Also, I didn’t realize that you can read the blog through email without visiting the site! That could definitely explain viewer levels because of the subscribers.

Finally, I think your comment about “compelling” is a v. good point.

      • The comment issue seems to have cleared up for me. Within the Daily Trail email, there are links to ‘Comment’ or ‘Like’. Clicking ‘Comment’ takes me to the TDT website’s reply section. It hasn’t happened for a week now, but for a while, whenever I tried to post my reply, it failed to post. The webpage acted as if my comment was posting, but it no comment ever appeared. It just disappeared into bit heaven.

When I click the ‘Like’, button in my email it shows up on the website. When I click the like button star on the website, I get the ‘working swirl’ but it never ends.

        I hope this helps.

        • It is odd. When the swirls show up, do you refresh your screen (e.g. F5)? Do you leave and return to see if it’s there? Well, I suppose you do. It just may be quirky. Sometimes when I respond, it makes me log in! There were no comments in the Pending File, either. If it happens again, just leave me a Comment. Okay, bad joke.
