Mark’s optimism gets a kick in the shins

This is a panel of AI experts? Clearly, Rob Bettancourt (Cricket Bro) conned both Bill Ellis and Mark Trail, as the only other apparent member of this AI “expert panel” is Rob’s brother, Jadsen Sterling. Both were involved in trying to swindle Mark’s dad, Happy Trail, out of his money to support their fraudulent NFT venture (“Oregon Trails”, 2022).

Well, AI experts or not, the brothers are expert grifters in the AI/NFT field. And from way things are shaping up, I’m not holding my breath that the audience is really composed of tech pros, either.

    • Read the article. Hoo-boy. Makes you wish that the Internet was still just a project. The article is an eye-opener, all the same, for how contemporary soc/pol theory and politics get shared and worked out among select groups of people. In the past, such people would have to set up group phone calls, in-person get-togethers, or letter exchanges, all of which take more time and effort, which could also act as a temporizing influence.

Yep, they make the likes of the Crypto Bros look like grade schools kids playing grownup.

    • Downpuppy, just paste the link’s text, itself. Anybody can copy it into a browser. If you have not done that procedure before, click the right mouse button in the comment and choose “paste as plain text” (or something similar). That should work. Of course, if you are on Apple, I think you can use Shift + Command + V. If you are on a smart phone, I’ve got no idea. Well, if it is not a long link, just type it in, or the main hostname and fiddly bits at the end.

      • Of course I could do that, and will try & remember your preference. In other spots, I’ve been told off for posting too long links and messing things up for people reading on phones.
I use a fairly large HP desktop machine, where the shortcuts (Or the jokes : What’s on your Alt+F4?) haven’t changed much since the last millennium. It’s pretty easy to navigate.

    • Actually, the link DID take, Downpuppy. I missed seeing it. When I clicked on “link”, it too me to the Semafor article, “The group chats that changed America”, so I think we’re all good.

  1. It was just that your linker button here is tricky. It says “Press ENTER to add this link”, but if I do that instead of clicking the arrow in the box, it posts the comment without completing the link.

    • Hmm, I tried to paste a link and it worked okay, just as yours did. I wonder why it didn’t show up as an active link for you. Perhaps refreshing the page would do it? I look at your comment in Edge and Chrome; both were valid.

      • My first post had the problem. The second time I was careful not to hit ENTER until the link was finished. It’s a Word Press issue, just something you have to watch out for in places where there’s no edit option.
The Semaphor story is one of those things where the more you know about the characters involved the worse it gets.
