Mark thinks he’s delivering another Sunday nature chat

There seem to be some people missing in action; Diana Daggers being one. We can see Jadsen in the background in panel 1 recording video, along with the purple people who are supposedly there to help Range Shaw rescue Cricket Bro. Behind Jadsen and the purple people appears to be a lake; something that has not been depicted in this location previously. Perhaps the angle was wrong or something.

Why is Ranger Shaw taking such a long time to carve out the rock around the stuck Cricket Bro? Limestone is not a hard rock to cut. Maybe it has to do with the fact that the limestone is in multiple layers and liable to fracture and make things worse. On the other hand, I’ll repeat that a block and tackle or plain everyday rescue rope could have been used to pull Cricket Bro out, towards the entrance. I’m also surprised that Jules Rivera didn’t have Ranger Shaw and his helpers putting ropes around Cricket Bro to ensure that he doesn’t accidentally fall through if the floor opens up on him. I’m even surprised Mark didn’t come up with that idea.

For some reason, Ranger Shaw is hot to contradict Mark (panel 3), or maybe just stop his line of discussion for some reason that I expect we’ll learn about tomorrow. Mark may as well go home, since the cave rescue team is on the job and his weight only adds to the danger of another floor collapse. At the very least, he and Jadsen should be told to move up to the entrance, along with the others.

The Week in Review and the Sunday Nature Chat

We had an action-packed week, for sure. Wait, I’m looking at my calendar. Sorry! As for Mark Trail, well, the cave crisis continued. The week began as Mark and Cherry traded “married jokes” at home, only to be interrupted by a phone call from Diana Daggers, which sent Mark to Cave Rescue Battle Stations. Also, a moment of science-fiction possibility surfaced on Tuesday, only to be ignored thereafter. You can check out that strip and my discussion for details.

Mark arrived at the cave, dressed and outfitted for what he thought would be a simple rescue, pulling somebody up from some hole they must have fallen into. Instead, when he saw the actual situation at hand (Cricket Bro being stuck in a collapsed part of the cave floor), Mark was immediately stymied! Why? Mark explained to everybody that the situation was likely due to a weakened limestone floor because of water damage from below. And it required special tools he didn’t have or bring. The Bottom Line: Amateur Hour was over and it was time to call in the real cave rescue experts.

But those “experts” turned out to be Ranger Shaw and some purple people. Instead of asking how Cricket Bro was doing or if he felt as if the floor was giving way, Cave rescue expert Ranger Shaw berated him for ignoring the danger sign he posted. Mark got in his licks, as well. But then, Cricket Bro suddenly fell through the floor and disappeared into the darkness of an underground river.

Just kidding. Sorry to say that Cricket Bro is still stuck in the cave floor. But any actual drama you might expect (in another context) is missing here, as Rivera predictably leaned into adventure strip parody.  Anyway, that’s the week in Mark Trail.

Jules Rivera carries on the tradition (at least going back to James Allen) of often linking the Sunday topic to the current storyline. In fact, this is the second Sunday cave talk posted for this story, though the first one focused more on the wildlife found in caves.

The title panel here is certainly unusual, due in part to the color scheme. I’m guessing that the strip’s title is built up from the water drops Mark mentioned that form stalactites.

Ranger Shaw—?! I thought Mark was calling in professionals!

I wonder where Diana Daggers has gotten to? All I see are more purple people showing up. Once again, she is stuck playing a bit role. That’s a shame, as the character had lots of potential.

Jadsen’s excuse of linguistic ignorance is not surprising, but lacks veracity, since Diana did warn the two brothers about the danger. Meanwhile, intrepid cartoonist Jules Rivera continues to make this cave rescue into another farce instead of a serious misadventure.

Then again, anything involving Ranger Shaw is, itself, a bad sign. I’m not sure if Rivera sees Shaw that way, but all of his dealings in this strip seem to have been underhanded, corrupt, or just incompetent. Thus, it is possible that Ranger Shaw’s efforts may actually make things worse! That could add another few weeks to the story.

As for Rivera’s comment in panel 2, score another put-down of her bread-and-butter.

Chill out, Mark!

And there we are: the sometimes arrogant, overconfident Mark Trail who thought watching YouTube videos of cave disasters would help prepare him for his secondary job of “Cave Rescue Man” at least has enough integrity to realize he is in over his head. Instead of bluffing through it, he decided maybe the professionals would be the better call. I’m guessing this retreat by Mark won’t improve Diana Daggers’s reputation with Cricket Bro. Perhaps Mark should spend more time watching videos on how to be a better nature journalist and photographer.

Still, aren’t there enough tools on hand? They have ropes to tie around Cricket Bro to prevent him from falling farther down. Then it would be a matter of chipping around his torso a bit to pull him out. But did Mark bring a shovel or pickaxe as I had earlier hoped? No? Oh, Mark, you didn’t watch enough videos, I reckon.

I think today’s installment is something of a disconnect: The dialog that Mark delivers is even-toned and mostly unemotional. But it is in direct contrast to the panicked expressions I see on his face. In fact, panel 4 shows us a Mark Trail that is on the verge of flipping out, which is not the kind of reaction you want to present to people expecting you to help them.

This contrast just seems strange to me. One theory may be that Mark noticed the cave crisis is being recorded, so he’s hamming it up, just like the people he sees on Reality TV shows. Or maybe the comics syndicate didn’t like the dialog that Jules Rivera had originally added, so they toned it down for family consumption.

Cricket Bro: He doth protest too much!

Well, it looks like Jadsen (Crypto Bro) is still recording the incident, after all (panel 3). Perhaps Jules Rivera doesn’t want to make him to appear as too much of a doofus.

But in a holdover from the prior Trailverse, Captain Obvious informs everybody what everybody already knows, unless Mark is simply verbally expressing his own realization of what happened: That Cricket Bro’s butt-cheeks are too big to pull him out of the hole he has gotten himself stuck into.

This doesn’t seem like the kind of cave rescue Mark has been watching and pining for. It’s really more of a plumbing problem. Hopefully, Mark has a hammer, shovel, or small pickaxe on hand to enlarge and unclog the hole Cricket Bro is stuck in. But will this lead to a bigger problem, such as Cricket Bro falling through, or maybe an unseen water source suddenly filling the cave? Otherwise, this could be a really short story.  I’m guessing something is going to happen to complicate the situation.

That’s it! The Reuben nomination goes back into the drawer!

What a drag! Not only did Mark not pass through that wonderful oculus we saw yesterday, but Jules Rivera simply returned to using her standard “portrait tondo” for indirectly displaying the person speaking.

Shockingly, Mark is being especially reckless with his equipment, like an ignorant parent who puts a young child in the front seat. Not only is the backpack unzipped to expose its contents, but it is not even secured to the seat by a seat belt. It belongs in the trunk. Any hard turn, emergency stop, or even a big bump can send that equipment falling or bouncing around the front seat area. Some of that stuff could even interfere with Mark’s ability to safely operate his car. What an amateur!

And just look at this dude!(panel 3) Is he on Speed or Meth!? Egads! Reckless with equipment and sporting a maniacal expression that would scare a drunk driver off the road. All the while, he dispenses contradictory puns, to boot. All bad news. I wouldn’t let Mark come within a hundred yards of me. “Just keep driving, Mark. Maybe the State Police will pull you over, take one look, and lock you up.” So I question why Rivera chooses to make Mark act and look like this. If it isn’t drugs, is he channeling Jim Carey!?

Still, I wonder if Mark took the trouble to call on Ranger Shaw for backup or even just to update him on the situation?

Art Dept. Speaking of the interactive oculus portal, I think this strip would increase in popularity with a bit more of that weirdness. In the early days of animation, the early cartoons of Felix the Cat were inventive journeys into surrealistic fantasy, where any element on the screen, including exclamation points, could be grabbed by Felix and turned into whatever object was needed at the time. It was a dux ex machina strategy that made the animations more fun to watch. A bit of that could certainly improve this strip.

Sci-Fi finds its way into the Trailverse!

So the circle of cause and effect is complete, including the unusual oculus in panel 3, which is actually intriguing from a science-fiction angle. More on that, later.

But before all that, it’s good that this story is moving along at a rapid pace, since there isn’t really much depth or content at stake here. It’s a simple morality tale of what happens when somebody believes their actions don’t have the possibility of bad consequences. In this case, it is not simply disregarding posted safety warnings, but believing nature hold no dangers to those who choose to disregard them.

In the “old days”, natural disasters were usually credited to the capriciousness of deities by people who were trying to make sense of chaos. Or, in the case of this cave incident, Cricket Bro’s entrapment might have been seen as actions by trolls or demons pulling Cricket Bro down to the Underworld because he must have trespassed or transgressed some sacred or mystical law. Regardless of our scientific advances, people still do stupid things, and people still have unlucky accidents.

Art Dept. That oculus in panel 3 linking Mark and Cherry to what’s going on in the cave is something of a new element in this strip. Typically, we would see a kind of dialog balloon leading to the phone of the person talking:

But what we see in today’s strip is something more, something different. Something rather cool and provocative. First, the oculus (as I am calling it) is free-standing, without a visible connection to the phone. Second, Diana Daggers is holding onto the rim of the oculus, with her glove extending into Mark and Cherry’s space! Third, not only is Mark looking at the oculus instead of his phone, so is Cherry! It’s like a physical portal connecting one location with the other. One could imagine characters actually crossing between the two locations (I’m thinking Stargate SG-1).

Mark is still stuck on caves. How convenient!

I don’t know; I wonder if Jules Rivera has spent enough time and effort ensuring that this setup is as obvious and predictable as it can get. Well, as parody, I reckon this passes muster, if parody is the point.

But there must be other things Rivera could add … For example, Mark could go on “cave patrol” to be a visible resource and a “just in case” rescue resource as he moves around. Mark could also check in with Ranger Shaw and ask him if he’s noticed any special activity around the local caves. That might even give Shaw the motivation to do his job. I’m surprised that Mark hasn’t taken the trouble to install video cameras at local cave sights that he could monitor for any instances of trouble. Any of these could work to make him aware of what’s going on in Peligroso Cave. But as we know, Diana is going to call Mark, anyway. Now, wouldn’t it be interesting if Mark didn’t catch the call, because somebody was using a noisy vacuum cleaner!?

I may have to take Mark’s word about him being struck by lightning four times and surviving. I found nothing in my archives, nor in Mark Trail Confidential. Google AI has no information. If you know of any specific occurrences, post a comment.

The Week in Review and the Sunday Nature Chat

The Two Bro’s (they had a collective name at one time, but I forgot it) and Diana Daggers continue their illegal descent into Peligroso Cave, in or near Lost Forest (remember, it had been sealed by Ranger Shaw because of flooding danger). Well, Diana hung back out of a sense of self-preservation, which angered Cricket Bro at what he considered her cowardice. Little did he know …!

There was the usual bickering going from both sides of the cave. Brother Jadsen decided he would provide close-up video with his phone, while Diana shot her video from the mouth of the cave. As Cricket Bro did a spot commercial for his Cricket Bars and then bragged about his cave prowess, the cave floor suddenly opened up, causing him to fall half-way through. His foot got caught in something that prevented him from lifting himself out. While Jadsen tried to calm Cricket Bro, Diana did an online search for local cave rescue resources (at least she was near the entrance, so she had a signal). But then, who popped up in the search results, but Mark Trail!

Unlike Mark’s cave escape episode (Arachnid Ho!), which ran for over six months, this looks like it’s going to be a “short story” adventure. It only began on August 3rd and it’s already time to bring Mark in to make the rescue. Well, I think it there has to be something more than Cricket Bro getting his ankle stuck. So I think Jules Rivera will have to up the ante by introducing something a lot more dramatic, like Jadsen also falling through the floor, or maybe the cave to start flooding from water escaping up through the flooring that gave way, trapping Cricket Bro. If that was to happen, we might even see Diana, still tethered to her safety rope, attempting to go down and pull the idiots back up, while waiting for Mark to arrive. Several rescue scenarios come to mind, right? Will any come to reality?

At first, I thought Mark had discovered an animal that was not on anybody’s endangered animals list. However, it turns out they are on lists in Ohio, Mississippi, Kansas, Tennessee, Texas, and Alabama. However, there is hope: Aligators, red fox, bald eagles, and white-tailed deer thrive!

When the going gets rough, the rough get Mark Trail!

Speak and ye shall find! Looks like Mark showed up pretty fast, even if it is just via an image. How did Diana wind up with Mark’s face and name that easily? As an experiment, I typed in just what she said in panel 2 and got a search list that included the DNR and numerous area private organizations that deal with caves, sinkholes, woods, and the like. No specific individuals, no single “best expert” around here. Then again, Lost Forest is a small enclave, so maybe Mark is the only resource available. I’d want to look closely at Diana’s search results to see whether the listing is really some kind of “Ad” that Mark paid for to get top search results.

And certainly, this was all rather convenient. As we saw at the beginning of the month, Mark was preparing for helping in cave crises by watching cave disaster videos. And now we have people in trouble at a local cave. It’s a coincidence all too common in TV shows. It’s like I was home studying the history of the French guillotine, when suddenly a friend calls to invite me to come watch a documentary on the French Revolution. Wow! I’m so ready!! Well, I might experiment with this idea: I’m going to watch some videos about rich people and wait for somebody to drop by with a very large cashier’s check.

Getting back to our story, I noticed that in the midst of the emergency, nobody seems to be filming anymore! But this is exactly the kind of drama and excitement that Cricket Bro is looking for! Diana was supposed to have her video camera set up. Boy, won’t Cricket Bro be mad if none of this is recorded!?

It didn’t take very long for the expected disaster to occur!

How typical. I go to the State Fair and the expected cave disaster begins in Mark Trail. Figures. Well, the weather today was really nice, though it did get pretty warm, especially when you are in the sun a lot, moving through crowds of people who deliberately walk slower than you or even stop in front of you! The nerve! Yes, the lines were long, and the food was expensive. What did I expect, right? But at least it wasn’t Orlando.

So, Cricket Bro starts bragging and then falls through the cave floor, huh? Apparently, the flooring at this level is not rock, but some kind of porous earth. But not porous enough for Cricket Bro to fall completely through, yet still leave a lot of cracks on the surface. Now, recently flowing water or even underground water could weaken the ground, especially if there is a cavern or space below the floor. And the ground does have that “recently held water” clay look to it. Or maybe a cave cryptid is holding onto Cricket Bro.

Anyway, I have some questions:

  1. How much of Cricket Bro’s calamity is getting filmed? It appears Crypto Bro (Jadsen) had been filming, but stopped by panel 3. Not sure what Diana is doing, though she is facing away from the crisis and still wearing her trademark shades. Very strange.
  2. Why does Jadsen refer to his brother as “Cricket Bro”, instead of his real name, Rob? Maybe once a nickname gets implanted, it’s hard to stop using it, even among family members.
  3. How long will it be before Mark finally shows up?

Can’t wait for Saturday’s strip!

“We’ll be back on track after a word from our sponsor …us!”

Is that a camera with a telephoto lens in Diana Dagger’s hands? I seem to recall she showed up with a video camera and tripod, which we saw back on August 15 and then again in silhouette this past Monday. Well, I reckon she can have brought in both, right? Might just be my own confusion. But she’ll have a great view of the expected flood as it washes the Goofball Bros into the bottom of the cave. If anybody is expecting real tragedy here, forget it. This all parody and farce. About the only thing that ever happens is somebody breaks a leg or an arm. Even neglected gorillas just get heat stroke, but then recover and get placed in nice homes.

Art Dept. For some reason, Jules Rivera seems to be laying down thicker lines here, especially in panel 1. Given Rivera’s simplified style, I think the thicker lines actually work better, giving the figures more presence and a stronger sense of mass. Relatively speaking, that is. It’s a contrast to panel 3, which looks more like the drawing Rivera normally relies on. Even the lines in the cave have a different feel between the panels.

Did Diana Daggers read Dante’s “Inferno”?

Today’s installment does little more than establish Diana Dagger’s operational position within this cave exploration group. She certainly doesn’t want to risk a one-way trip to the Underworld. Surprisingly, Jadsen (aka, Crypto Bro) sticks up for her! (For those of you who are new here—and that’s an optimistic thought!—Cricket Bro and Crypto Bro are brothers and are Jules Rivera’s take on the rich, egotistical, corrupt Silicon Valley types.)

BTW, the answer to yesterday’s quiz:  Well, I was probably being a bit unfair to you all. Unless you happen to be a reader of 19th century English Lit, especially stories of a humorous bent, you would not catch my pun (My wife would simply say I’m once again showing off or being snooty). The title to yesterday’s post (“Three schmucks in a cave, to say nothing of the frog”) is a spoof on the book title “Three Men in a Boat, to say nothing of the dog,” by Jerome K. Jerome. It was a very popular book with the public in late 19th century England. Its humor and writing falls somewhat flat and slow by today’s standards.

Three schmucks in a cave, to say nothing of the frog

Points to Diana for having enough sense to bring along some basic safety equipment. While the drawing in panel 2 doesn’t suggest a very long length of rope, I’ll give Jules Rivera a bit of artistic license in this case; within reason. But I’m surprised Diana expected to find places to attach a rope. So, how fragile are those stalagmites, anyway?

I do like the cutaway view of the cave in panel 3; it’s like watching an ant farm. But it is also a convenient technique for giving a panoramic view of the group’s progress.

Did anybody catch my literary pun in the today’s title? I don’t claim to be clever, but the phrase just popped out of my head, like Athena from the forehead of Zeus (ignore that allusion; it’s just my academic-era PTSD showing up again).

The Week in Review and the Sunday Nature Chat

This week was a contest between personal values and professional ethics. At times, that can be a traumatic experience, and it was so for Diana Daggers in this past week’s strips.

Cricket Bro, brother Crypto Bro, and Diana were on location at the Peligroso Cave, currently closed because of the threat of flooding. Cricket Bro needed to visit the cave to fulfill his own agenda of providing thrills to his online followers in order to sell more Cricket Power Bars. Diana tried to talk Cricket Bro out of it, declaring it was too dangerous to enter right now. But he insisted on exploring, and Diana must come to video the event, else she would not get paid. The ethical debate was set.

Diana went over the numbers and realized she needed the money badly, but also believed this was a really stupid thing to do. Given who she was with, she should not have been surprised. In fact, signing up for anything Cricket Bro wanted to do is pretty stupid. I observed that Kelly Welly, who signed up to assist the two Bros in what turned out to be some kind of AI scam in New York, was not part of this group. Hence, Diana Daggers. Anyway, Diana had to weigh the possibility of personal danger against the near certainty of financial disaster. It was enough to make her put aside her own safety for the financial reward. Against her better judgement, she agreed to go into the cave with the two brothers.

There are things she might have prepared for, to mitigate the danger, such as bringing along safety equipment. Well, they do have backpacks, so it’s possible they have some of that.  The week ended with them cutting down the caution tape and entering the cave. And speaking of things associated with caves …

Here we are, once again, with bats. This is not the first time Rivera has devoted a page to them. With all of the other issues in our environment, I’d think that she could find other things to discuss. Like rabies.

That boot is nicely laced!

Click on the strip to zoom in. Click your browser’s Back button to return to the normal view.

“Enough raving, more caving!” Catchy phrase, that.  Reader Hannibal’s Lectern made a good point yesterday that Diana Daggers has more leverage than she realizes, since she is the videographer. If Diana doesn’t go into the cave, Cricket Bro gets no video to prove his exploration. Well, unless he or his brother happen to have something like a GoPro on them.

Now GoPros are not known for quality work in lowlight situations. However, as we have seen before in prior cave episodes, caves surprisingly have plenty of residual light. And everybody has helmet lights, as well. I reckon we’ll find out tomorrow what Diana’s decision is going to be.

The cave seal has been torn asunder, so if Ranger Shaw does make the rounds he should spot the infiltration. Then again, Ranger Shaw has shown himself to not be the most dependable person in Lost Forest. So if disaster strikes, the explorers may have to rely on Mark’s “heightened forest awareness powers,” for discovery and rescue, as commenter be ware of eve hill suggested.

Cue the Laugh Track!

The lure of gag strips is almost always too much for Jules Rivera to ignore, so Rivera’s continued forays into humor wipe away any chance of actual drama or danger. Today is another good example of Rivera succumbing to her inner Peanuts. Too bad she wasn’t offered the job of taking over an abandoned, but still published humor strip, such as Get Fuzzy (in spite of the fact that it is published by a different syndicate).

But why stop there, when she could make a pitch for rebooting Peanuts. Or even Dilbert!?  There are precedents:  Numerous old gag strips have already gone through one or more reboots, such as Nancy, Gasoline Alley, Alley Oop, and Popeye.

The moment when Diana Daggers realizes that she should have gone into the Trades.

And as it was foretold in the Book of Mark Trail, “She, too, shall cave…” Diana Daggers once again faces a financial crisis. But some of this is on her for continuing to associate with grifters and hustlers. So, into the cave they will go, as Diana thinks to herself how foolish she is for deciding that rent is more important than life.

Well, when they all get trapped—as this story seems to demand—I’m curious to see how anybody discovers them. I don’t think it will be Mark’s “Cave Rescue” antennae that start twitching. More likely, it will be Ranger Shaw as he makes his rounds and notices the ripped sign and footprints. Perhaps Mark will happen to be tagging along with Ranger Shaw asking if he knows anybody trapped in a cave and needing a rescue. It all fits!

Diana continues to try and change Cricket Bro’s mind …

Okay, the only real issue left, as far as I can tell, is whether Diana Daggers goes along with Heckle and Jeckle into the cave. What say you? Can this story even continue without her assent to descend?

Diana attempts to stop the predictable disaster.

Well, at least Diane Daggers has enough moxie to try to knock sense into the Bonehead Bros, for all the good it will do. The real question is what will she do next:  Leave or follow? Diana knows she is near Mark and Cherry’s cabin, but maybe it all depends on how much she needs the pay.

Anyway, I’m rooting for Cricket Bro to enter the cave. And I’m also rooting for the cave to not let him leave!

I might feel differently if Cricket Bro or the other regular cast of mischief makers had anything hinting at a personality greater than a single motive. But there seems to be none to be had. Wait. I take that back. Faux Professor Bee Sharp has displayed different attitudes and actions towards Mark over the years, both pro and con. More con than pro, I’ll grant you, but he does exhibit a bit of complexity. Cricket Bro, on the other hand, is just a superficial conman. He would not be missed. The least he could do is go back to Oregon and investigate some of their caves so we can have a different story. That’s not gonna happen, so put on your steel helmet and light, as this story is about to cave into catastrophe.
