Based on Trail’s many odd expressions and behavior, I’d say he is way out of his element on this adventure; possibly because he never seems to read adventure stories, such as those written by such masters of adventure as Jules Verne, Alexander Dumas, and Arthur Conan Doyle. Otherwise, he’d have learned to roll with the punches much better.
